Drone GPR for Municipalities: When It Makes Sense
Aerial ground-penetrating radar (GPR/UAS) reveals underground utilities, structures, and voids without extensive excavation. When municipalities use it and what to expect from the survey.
GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) sends electromagnetic waves into the subsurface and estimates depth and character of buried objects from the reflected signal. From a drone, the method can cover larger areas than walk-over profiles — typically on roads, squares, or brownfield sites.
Typical municipal applications
Locating utilities before excavation, mapping structures beneath pavements, checking bridge embankments, or detecting voids near heritage-protected buildings. Deliverables typically include radargrams, interpreted layers, and georeferenced GIS export.
Limitations and preparation
Results depend on soil moisture, material, and depth. Before the survey, it helps to clarify the objective (utility, structure, void) and provide background data — ideally a site boundary and known networks from existing documentation.
